Player Guide
Welcome to SPEAR! Hope you like going fast, because that’s the aim of the game; get to the goal as fast as possible. I mean, really, who leaves perfectly good milk out of the fridge.
Controls
The controls to SPEAR are very straight forward. Simply hold D to move towards the right of the screen, and A to move toward the left. Pressing the spacebar allows you to jump and clicking the mouse will throw your spear in the direction you clicked, which leads us to the tricky part. If you are holding down the mouse button when the spear lands on a wooden surface, you will not be dragged anywhere, and will start swinging from where you’re standing. If you are not pressing the mouse button when the spear lands on a wooden surface, you will be pulled toward the spear, assuming you didn’t put a wall between you and your destination.
Gameplay
The gameplay is rather straightforward. You move around a map, using the materials you have to assist you, in order to reach the end. Along the way, you’ll pass checkpoints (shaped as doors) and avoid hazards (some swirly particle monsters and some spikes) to collect coins to unlock puzzles and make it to the end of the game. Whilst you can’t kill the enemies, you can trap them by putting them in a corner, or stopping them by moving off screen.
The Title Screen
The title screen is very simple, it plays a little video of someone jumping and swinging around, with 3 buttons over the top of it. The start button will run the game, the High Score button will take you to a screen where you can see the best time, and the Lindsay Mode button will run the game with enemy collisions turned off (spikes can still hurt you though!)
High Score
An even simpler screen that displays the best time that’s been achieved, starting at 166:40. The only other thing of note on this screen is a button to return to the main menu.
The Game
The game scene is where it gets a bit more complicated. In the above screenshot, you can see spikes, which will reset you to the last checkpoint you interacted with. You can see the doors, which are the checkpoints you reset to, the wall and floor tiles, platforms, and the wood tiles that allow you to use your spear.
This screenshot adds an example of coins, as well as enemies. The floating mass of red dots are the enemies, and the coins are animated and bounce up and down until you collect them.
Completion
This screenshot shows the end of game screen that plays when you finish! 3 buttons to talk about, Main Menu, which returns you to the title screen, High Scores, which takes you to the high scores page, and Restart, which will reset the timer and let you go again.
I hope you enjoy!
